Area & Location: The name ‘Windmeul’ derived from an old windmill that stood where the Windmeul Wine Cellar is at present. Windmeul is a small hamlet situated amongst farms and wine cellars on the R44, 7 km from Wellington and 7 km from Paarl, with a small school, post office, shop and church. Both the area and school is also named ‘Slot van die Paarl’ (‘Close of Paarl’) as this is where the main road coming from Paarl, used to end. Today this area (and the church) is also named ‘Agter Paarl’ (‘Behind Paarl’) because this little village is at the backside of Paarl Mountain. Farmers mostly farm with wine, export table grapes and olives, forming the largest olive industry in Southern Africa. The area also produces other products like sheep and cattle, corn, prunes, apricots, nectarines, lemons and figs, as well as lavender and rosemary. Apart from the many wine cellars, several 200 year- old farm mansions and huge sheds are used for weddings and other luxury functions. Klein Waterkloof is a portion of the original farm Waterkloof. It's name derived from the permanent water in streams and fountains in this area. In 1995 Waterkloof was divided into five 1-hectare smallholdings, all situated behind the Agter Paarl Church, creating a tranquil living environment to relax and enjoy nature. During spring the property is a festive feast of colours, especially at the dam. In autumn the surrounding vineyards are a patchwork of yellow, orange, red and brown colours.
